CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

I stifled a yawn and shuffled out of the kitchen to the front door wondering who had the nerve to knock so loudly so early in the morning. I opened the door. The equivalent of a triple shot espresso jolted my blood pressure, stalled my vocal chords.

“Good morning,” Ayden said after my lack of articulation played out too long.

I glanced over my shoulders.

“What’re you doing here?”

“I’m your ride.” Ayden gestured to his drool worthy sports car.

“Uhhhh.” My SAT vocabulary skills apparently missed their wake-up call.

“I know I’m early but—”

“Where’s Blake?”

“Car trouble. I thought I’d pick up the slack.” He flashed a charming smile. “And you.”

“Well, you thought wrong.” I slammed the door in his face and gave the lock a loud twist.

Okay, I was grumpy and Ayden wasn’t on my “nice” list. A grin slid across my face when I heard his aggravated, “Aurora” from the other side of the door. I hadn’t agreed to a morning pick-up. From him, or my new “boyfriend” Blake. Yeah, Matthias wouldn’t budge on that bonehead decision. I wasn’t crazy about this pretend scenario—especially with Blake whose seduction tactics were anything but—however I’d do what I had to for my family’s safety.

Ayden was easy on the eyes. And harder on the hormones. But he was arrogant and rude, still keeping secrets and I didn’t know if I could trust him and the Hex Boy entourage. Not to mention the “secure facility” problem.

And I was still peeved he’d snuck into my room last night. Uninvited, unannounced, impertinent, and impolite. And me in a towel? I blushed. Wonder how Dr. Lahey would feel about that “responsible” behavior?

I was cranky and still sore from the attack. Sparky—or Fiskick, if the dream was real, which seemed stupid now—had done a number on me. I hadn’t seen him coming. That worried me.

And the drowning thing was new. When I went mentally to where the demon was—underwater—I’d physically experienced his environment. Strange and scary things were afoot and lack of sleep wasn’t helping the cause.

“Who was it?” Luna asked as I entered the kitchen.

“No one.”

I sat down on the floor in front of the French doors to pull on my sneakers.

“Someone put a goofy grin on your face.”

I squelched the smile I hadn’t realized I was wearing, bothered I’d find Ayden amusing. The electrical encounter must have short circuited my good sense. “Wrong house.”

“Morning.”

My head jerked and banged against the glass door, adding yet another pain to my multitude of discomforts.

Ayden’s hunky figure, smiling and relaxed, sauntered into the kitchen and leaned against the fridge. Rubbing the back of my head I observed Luna demonstrating the term “star-struck.”

Her head swiveled to me. “No one?”

I sprung to my feet but regretted it. Lightheaded for any number of reasons and off-balance due to only wearing one shoe, I grabbed for a chair and missed. An arm went around my waist. Hard body. Soft leather. Not Luna. There went that little heart-stomach flutter thing. And of course, he smelled good. Sandalwood?

I pushed Ayden away and grabbed a stool.
